Inheritance

by John Mason

Earth shakes open thunder topples towers
Rivers flood forests shrivel cities crumble
Jagged flashes tumble planes from the skies
Across the face of the seas storms rage
Ships founder masts shattered sails torn
Human life flounders

Miles below in a canyon blacker than black
bubbles seep from abysmal vents over
a small smooth translucent amorphous blob
blind matter unfeeling unknowing unknown
unnamed nothingness that one day will
inherit it all
